Types of Ductless Condensers

Condenser Type Port Setup Best Use Case
Single-Zone Unit 1 set of refrigerant ports Connecting to exactly one indoor air handler (e.g., for a garage or single bedroom).
Multi-Zone Unit 2 to 6+ sets of ports Creating a whole-home network. Allows one outdoor unit to run multiple indoor heads.

Buying a Replacement Mini Split Condenser?

If your old outdoor unit broke but your indoor units are fine, you can buy a replacement. However, you must match:

  • 1
    The Brand & Series
A Cooper & Hunter indoor unit demands a Cooper & Hunter outdoor unit.
  • 2
    The Refrigerant
You cannot mix R410A indoor heads with an R32 outdoor unit.
  • 3
    The Voltage
Ensure your electrical panel provides the required 115V or 208/230V.

🎯 Building a system from scratch?

If you don't already have indoor units, mixing and matching can be risky. Save time and money by buying a pre-matched, guaranteed-compatible bundle from our Complete Systems Collection.

FAQ: Mini Split Outdoor Units

⚙️ What is the difference between a condenser and compressor?
The ductless condenser is the entire outdoor metal box you see outside your home. The mini split compressor is the large, black mechanical pump inside that box that circulates the refrigerant. When people say they need a new outdoor unit, they mean the complete condenser assembly.
⚠️ Can I mix different brands of indoor and outdoor units?
No. A mini split outdoor unit must be paired with indoor air handlers of the exact same brand. The electronic communication boards inside the units are proprietary and will throw an error code if mixed.
🔄 Can I replace just the outdoor unit of my mini split?
Yes! If your indoor units are working perfectly but your outdoor unit failed, you can buy a replacement mini split condenser. However, it must precisely match the brand, refrigerant type, and communication protocol of your existing indoor heads.
🔌 Do I need a dedicated breaker for the outdoor unit?
Yes. The outdoor unit draws the vast majority of the power for the entire HVAC system. It must be hardwired to a dedicated disconnect box and circuit breaker on your main electrical panel.
