Up to about 800 sq ft at average conditions. We size at about 22 BTU per sq ft, more conservative than the ENERGY STAR room-size chart. Add capacity for a hot climate, ceilings over 8 ft, strong sun (+10%), a kitchen (+4,000 BTU) or each person over two (+600 BTU). 12,000 BTU = 1 ton — "tons" is just the older way of stating capacity. So 24,000 BTU = 2 tons, 36,000 = 3 tons, and so on. This system is 18,000 BTU (1.5-ton). BTU tells you the capacity; SEER2 tells you the efficiency.
