Refrigerant Note

Current MIA and Olivia wall mounts use R-454B. Some older listings, including the Sophia models and a few 115V units, still list R-410A, which is being phased down, so check the refrigerant on the listing and make sure your installer has the right tools and certification for it.

Series Decoder: MIA, Olivia, Olivia Midnight, Hyper Heat and Sophia

Cooper & Hunter's catalog is easier to read once you know what each line is for. This is how the series appear on our listings and in the 2026 catalog:

  • MIA: The value line, listed from 6,000 BTU upward in 115V and 230V, with R-454B on current models and heating listed down to 5°F. Good for mild and moderate climates.
  • Olivia: The step-up line, with higher SEER2 ratings (up to 24.6 in the models above) and heating listed down to -13°F.
  • Olivia Midnight: The Olivia platform with a black mirror panel for modern interiors.
  • Olivia Hyper Heat: Cold-climate versions of the Olivia platform, listed for heating down to -22°F. The catalog pairs these with its Hyper outdoor units.
  • Astoria: A premium line in the 2026 catalog, with ratings up to about SEER2 27 on its highest-efficiency outdoor units. We list only a couple of Astoria products.
  • Sophia: An older line that is mostly sold out on our site and lists R-410A. See the Sophia series page for what is currently available.

Cooper and Hunter 12000 BTU: 115V vs. 230V

The MIA 12,000 BTU comes in both voltages at the same $863.04 starting price. Cooling and heating output are the same, and the SEER2 ratings are nearly identical (21.2 on 115V and 21.3 on 230V). The decision comes down to what your electrical panel can support.

Spec MIA 12K 115V MIA 12K 230V
Outdoor MCA 19A 13A
Outdoor max fuse (MOCP) 20A 15A
Typical breaker (from MCA/MOCP) 20A single-pole 15A double-pole
Typical copper wire (from MCA) 12 AWG 14 AWG

The product listings do not state a breaker or wire size, so the last two rows are worked out from the MCA and MOCP values. Your installer must confirm them against the nameplate and local code. In practice, a 115V unit needs a dedicated 20A circuit with 12 AWG wire, and a 230V unit needs a double-pole breaker. If adding a 230V circuit would require an expensive panel upgrade, the 115V version can be the better total-cost choice.

Rated Sound Levels: MIA 12K

These are the manufacturer's rated indoor sound levels from the MIA 12,000 BTU listings, not independent tests. Real-world sound depends on the room, the mounting and the fan speed you use.

Fan Setting MIA 12K 115V MIA 12K 230V
Silent 17.5 dB(A) Not listed
Low 25.0 dB(A) 22.5 dB(A)
Medium 32.5 dB(A) 32 dB(A)
High 40.5 dB(A) 38 dB(A)
Turbo 45.0 dB(A) Not listed
Outdoor unit 54 dB(A) 54 dB(A)

On low and silent settings the indoor unit is very quiet, which suits bedrooms. High and turbo are noticeably louder, so they are best kept for fast cooling or heating. Place the outdoor unit away from bedroom windows.

Cold-Climate Heating: What the Listings Say

Heating capacity falls as outdoor temperatures drop, and the lowest operating temperature is not the same as full capacity. Here are the heating limits shown on our listings and in the catalog:

  • MIA: Heating operation from 5°F to 75°F outdoors.
  • Olivia and Olivia Midnight: Listed for heating down to -13°F.
  • Olivia Hyper Heat: Listed for heating down to -22°F, with Hyper outdoor units in the catalog.

If your winter design temperature is near or below your model's limit, choose a Hyper Heat model, and contact us for the capacity data at your temperature before you order.

Cooper and Hunter Warranty

Cooper & Hunter systems are backed by a manufacturer's limited warranty. Coverage depends on the model, on installation by a licensed HVAC contractor and on registering the unit. You can review the full terms on our warranty policy page.

How to Choose the Right Cooper and Hunter System

Getting the most from a Cooper & Hunter system comes down to matching it to your home. Start with these three decisions:

  1. Match the series to your climate. MIA is listed for heating down to 5°F and suits mild to moderate winters. Olivia is listed down to -13°F, and Olivia Hyper Heat is listed down to -22°F for the coldest regions.
  2. Match the voltage to your panel. A 115V unit runs on a dedicated 20A circuit, and a 230V unit runs on a double-pole breaker. Confirm your panel's capacity first and pick the voltage that fits it.
  3. Plan a licensed installation. A licensed HVAC contractor handles the installation, the R-454B refrigerant and the product registration, which keeps your warranty coverage in place.

Not sure which combination fits your project? We can help you choose. Call us at (855) 775-4822 or use our contact page.

How to Buy the Right Cooper and Hunter Unit in 30 Minutes

Follow this sequence to avoid the most common ordering mistakes.

  1. Calculate the room's BTU load. Start with square footage, then adjust for ceiling height, sun exposure and insulation. Oversizing makes an inverter system cycle on and off instead of running steadily, which hurts comfort and humidity control. Ask us for a sizing check if you are unsure.
  2. Confirm your circuit. Photograph your breaker panel. A 115V unit needs a dedicated 20A circuit and a 230V unit needs a double-pole breaker, both with a disconnect near the outdoor unit.
  3. Select the series by climate. MIA suits mild climates, Olivia and Olivia Midnight add efficiency and style, and Hyper Heat is for cold climates.
  4. Check certifications. The MIA 115V listing shows ETL, AHRI, Energy Star and NEEP certifications. Rebate programs often ask for the AHRI certificate for your exact indoor and outdoor pairing, so confirm it before you buy.
  5. Choose the line set length. The MIA listing shows a 16 ft factory kit option plus 25 ft and 50 ft kits, a refrigerant charge for 25 ft of pipe and a maximum pipe length of 82 ft. Select the kit option you need, and confirm what is included with us before ordering.
  6. Plan the registration. Have your licensed installer register the unit after installation so the warranty applies.
  7. Add smart control. Many current models include Wi-Fi. For wall-mounted units without it, add the USB Wi-Fi module, or use a wired wall thermostat where handheld remotes tend to go missing. A spare replacement remote is also easy to order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Cooper and Hunter 12000 BTU mini split cost?

On our site, the Cooper & Hunter MIA 12,000 BTU wall mount starts at $863.04 in either 115V or 230V, and the Olivia 12,000 BTU wall mounts start between about $1,348 and $1,401, depending on the model. Longer line set kits and Hyper Heat models raise the total. Prices change, so check the product page for the current price.

What is the difference between the MIA, Olivia and Sophia series?

MIA is the value line, with heating listed down to 5°F. Olivia is the upgraded line, with higher SEER2 ratings and heating listed down to -13°F, and Olivia Midnight adds a black mirror panel. Olivia Hyper Heat models are listed for heating down to -22°F. Sophia is an older line that is mostly sold out on our site, and its listed models use R-410A.

Do Cooper and Hunter 115V mini splits need a dedicated circuit?

Yes. The MIA 12,000 BTU 115V lists an outdoor MCA of 19A and a maximum fuse of 20A, so it needs a dedicated 20A circuit, which in practice means 12 AWG copper wire. Your licensed installer should confirm the sizing against the nameplate and local code.

Can a Cooper and Hunter mini split heat in winter?

Yes. Our listings show MIA heating down to 5°F, Olivia down to -13°F and Olivia Hyper Heat down to -22°F. Heating capacity drops as it gets colder, so for regular winter temperatures near or below those limits choose a Hyper Heat model and ask us for the capacity data at your design temperature.

Does the Cooper and Hunter warranty cover labor?

No. The warranty covers defective parts, but labor, refrigerant, and shipping and handling costs are not covered. See our warranty policy for the full terms and the claim process.

Can I install a Cooper and Hunter mini split myself?

The warranty applies only to systems installed by a state-certified or licensed HVAC contractor. Systems that use R-454B, an A2L refrigerant, also require licensed technicians for installation and service, so plan to hire a licensed installer.

Do Cooper and Hunter mini splits have Wi-Fi?

Many current models list Wi-Fi control as included, including the MIA and Olivia wall mounts. If your unit does not include it, our USB Wi-Fi module works with wall-mounted Cooper & Hunter units.

*Disclaimer: A2L refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B require installation by licensed technicians; local codes may vary.*

Cooper and Hunter Mini Splits: The Verdict and Where to Buy

Cooper & Hunter gives you a clear ladder: MIA for value, Olivia for efficiency and style, and Hyper Heat for cold climates. Match the series to your climate, confirm the 115V or 230V circuit, and plan for licensed installation and registration so the manufacturer's warranty applies.
